Knife defense is one of the most misunderstood and over-simplified topics in martial arts and self-defense.
Too often, training becomes rigid choreography, flashy disarms, or unrealistic “one perfect answer” solutions to chaotic, high-pressure violence. Edge of Reality takes a different approach.
Created by Ryan Hoover and the Fit to Fight team, Edge of Reality is a modern, principle-driven approach to edged weapon defense rooted in real fighting skills, pressure testing, decision making, and adaptability under stress.
This is not a seminar built around memorizing dozens of techniques.
It’s a deep dive into:
managing distance and timing under pressure
protecting vital targets when range collapses
integrating striking, clinch work, wrestling, and positional control
understanding how and when to disengage
using structure, aggression, and decision-making under chaos
learning how to function when things are not clean or ideal
A core principle of the program is simple but uncomfortable:
“If you cannot fight someone who is unarmed, you cannot fight someone who is armed.”
Throughout the weekend, students will work through progressive drills, resistance-based training, control concepts, transitions, counter-offense, scenario work, and the integration of striking and grappling against edged weapon threats. The program heavily emphasizes adaptability over rigid technique collection.
Topics include:
pre-contact awareness and pre-emption
two-on-one control concepts
striking into control and control into striking
standing grappling and clinch integration
environmental awareness and movement
pressure testing and progressive resistance
understanding the realities and limitations of knife defense
survivability-focused decision making
This seminar aligns closely with Forge’s integrated self-defense philosophy: honest training, functional fighting skills, pressure testing, and the blending of striking, grappling, and weapons work into one cohesive system.
Who this is for:
Krav Maga practitioners
BJJ, wrestling, boxing, and kickboxing students
self-defense focused martial artists
instructors and coaches
law enforcement and security professionals
beginners willing to train hard with an open mind
No prior knife defense experience is required.
Students should expect a physically and mentally demanding weekend focused on learning, experimentation, problem solving, and realistic training—not ego or fantasy.
Train hard. Pressure test your assumptions. Learn where theory meets consequence.
